    REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MINIMUM STANDARD
    SUPPLEMENTAL FIREFIREGHTERS
    I

    Step 1: Application and Portfolio Requirements
     
    • A legible copy of a driver’s license, passport, or other legal document verifying
      proof of age as required by FS 633.412 (1)(a).
     
    • A complete Medical Assessment form as required by FS 633.412 (1)(e).
      Firefighting is physically demanding and stressful career field. Many fire
      departments require significant health and physical ability testing prior to
      and during employment. These requirements are unique to each individual
      agency. SFSC adheres to National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) standard 1582
      for firefighter health and safety NFPA 1582.
     
    • A signed affidavit concerning the use of tobacco, in accordance with
      FS 633.412 (1)(f).
    Step 2: Apply  
    • Apply online, pay the application fee, and complete all SFSC requirements for admissions.
     
     
    • Request a copy of your high school transcript or GED transcript with
      official test scores, in accordance with FS 633.412 (1)(a).
    • Complete an online application to the Fire Sciences I program.
     
         
    Important Notice
    You are required to successfully complete an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or
    First Responder course to meet current standards regarding the Firefighter I portion of
    training, in accordance with Florida Administrative Code (FAC) 69A -37. EMR is a co-requisite
    course offered at SFSC. For information and admission requirements for the next
    EMR course, consult SFSC’s Schedule of Classes.

    Applicants who have completed one of the following Federal Department of Transportation (FDOT),
    National Registry of EMTs (NREMT), or Florida Department of Education (FDOE) courses are
    exempt: Emergency Medical Responder (EMR); First Responder; Emergency Medical
    Technician (EMT); Paramedic.


    Program Acceptance Policies
    • Applicants are notified via email affirming the date and time the Minimum Standards
      application was successful submitted.  
    • Acceptance letters with the date/time of the mandatory Program Orientation are sent to
      those selected for the next scheduled Minimum Standards course. Failure to attend forfeits acceptance, and the applicant will be placed on the waiting list.  
    • Applicants not accepted are placed on a waiting list for the next available course offering.
      Those on the waiting list are encouraged to attend orientation in the event accepted
      applicants do not meet the criteria.  
    • Prior to completing the Firefighter I portion of this program, applicants are required to
      submit to a background check. SFSC submits fingerprints to FDLE and the FBI for the
      background check as required by for FS 633.412 (1)(c). Students who do not meet the
      statutory requirements of this section will not be eligible to progress to the Firefighter II
      portion of training without refund.
